The Ruins of Okoř

For some unknown reason, the vast majority of vampire folklore originates in central Europe.  Places like Okor Castle though begin to give one an inkling about why that might be so.

Again, a short distance from Prague stands the ruin of another 12th century castle.  Oddly enough, this castle was built in a valley.  Most fortifications were built on hills to offer the best strategic position.  This valley though happened to have a rather large rock in the middle of it that made perfect natural walls.

The sad truth about Okor is that it didn't become ruinous through war or natural disaster.  Rather, sheer dumb neglect over several centuries reduced the structure to what it is today.

The ruins are surrounded by a small village which makes for a great leisurely walk.

At the base of the castle walls can be seen this caged "cave".  There was no information about why someone saw the need to secure this opening.  I prefer to think its to keep the orcs from escaping and wreaking havoc.

Being a ruin, many areas of the castle were not open to exploration.  The above pictures show the lowest level of the castle and a doorway we were not allowed to enter.  The reason given of course is for the sake of safety.  But I prefer to thinks its because of the vampires.

Only one room at Okor could be called intact though it certainly wouldn't be comfortable. Bare stone and hard wood furniture are not exactly the lap of luxury.
